IOBC Awards to Attend the 3rd Combined Australian and New Zealand
Entomological Societies Conference
The International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) was established in 1955 as a global organization affiliated to the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). IOBC promotes environmentally safe methods of pest and disease control. Membership in IOBC gives individuals and organizations the opportunity to participate in biological control activities beyond their specific jobs and workplaces, and to contribute to the promotion of biological control worldwide.
The Asia-Pacific Regional Section (APRS) of the IOBC would like to invite applications from young scientists for awards to attend the 3rd Combined Australian and New Zealand Entomological Societies Conference
Conditions for applications are as follows:
• Candidates must be a member of IOBC; to join now, click here
• Candidates must be 35 or under
• Candidates must be presenting a paper or poster on biological control or a related IPM topic
Successful candidates will receive up to 500 Euros (approx. $Aus 690; $NZ 950; $US 700) per successful candidate, and we hope to make 4 awards. Entrants must indicate their eligibility for the awards on the Abstract Submission form on the conference website.
Illustration and Photographic Competition
The Australian Entomological Society’s Illustration and Photographic Competition aims to encourage and recognise high standards of entomological illustration. It will be held this year in conjunction with the Combined Australian and New Zealand Entomological Societies Conference, where the entries will be displayed and judged.
The competition consists of three categories, Student Illustration, Open Illustration, and the Photographic category. The illustration categories are further divided into Black and White, and Colour sections.
The Society has usually made available $AU100 for First Prize and $AU50 for Second Prize in each of the four illustration categories and $AU100, $AU50 and $AU25 for First, Second and Third Prizes in the photographic section. Highly commended certificates will also be awarded where appropriate.

The Entomological Society of New Zealand K.J. Fox Awards
Dr K.J. Fox was the society’s first ‘amateur’ Vice President of the Entomological Society of New Zealand. Following his death in 1985, a memorial fund was established to provide grants to assist ‘amateur’ (non-funded) members of the society to attend the annual conference. The first awards were made in 1988.
Applications for these awards are called for with the pre-conference newsletter, and the closing date is the same as that for conference registrations. A committee reviews the applications and applicants are notified as to whether they have been successful, and how much they have been awarded, in advance of the conference. In making awards, the committee takes into account the applicants’ financial situation, and the likely benefits, both to the applicants and the society, from their attendance. As many awards as possible are made, but not necessarily for the same amount, as distance travelled is taken into account. Payment is made to successful applicants at the conference. These awards are available to current members of the Entomological Society of New Zealand only.
Applications should be made using this form.
The Phil Carne Prize
The Australian Entomological Society’s Phil Carne Prize is aimed at fostering high quality entomological research in young scientists. The name of the prize celebrates contributions made by Dr Phil Carne to the science of entomology and the Australian Entomological Society. The prize is a certificate and also includes cash remuneration to the value of $AU 300. This year’s winner will be invited to present their paper at the 3rd combined Australian and New Zealand Entomological Societies Conference, and receives a maximum of $AU 1,000 towards conference expenses (registration, travel, accommodation) on receipts.
The prize is open to any honours or postgraduate student enrolled in an Australian University, either full-time or part-time, who has not submitted their thesis by the closing date. Entrants do not have to be members of the Australian Entomological Society.
Details on the Prize, the entry form and closing date are available on the website of the Australian Entomological Society.
